A dedication to the bean in this city cafe.

Small batch on-site roasting that’s delivered passionately by an army of skilled baristas places this city cafe (and its Gridlock beans) in the upper echelons of Melbourne coffee. 65 Degrees is run with such high attention to detail that it’s hard not to be swept up by the sheer energy and dedication to the bean.

Expect a corporate crush before midday as loyal fans come to see which single origins are playing that day; usually a mix of five or more from Asia, Africa and South and Central America that rotate at dizzying speeds. Espressos burst with aromas, while consistently-smooth, milk-based takeaways are served with pace.

The utilitarian furnishings offer ample space to sit and eat food from the all-day breakfast and lunch menus. The gourmet baguettes, including a twice-cooked pork belly with crackling, grated apple, coleslaw and coriander, are particularly tasty.

A homemade tiramisu, infused with Gridlock Coffee, is one of many tempting sweets available from the counter display – which is perfect with a the extensive variety of single origin beans and continually tweaked house blends that are available to take away.
