This weekly farmers market has been reliably showcasing some of the best local produce – from either side of the border – for the better part of 20 years.

Wodonga’s Saturday morning farmers markets have been running continuously since 2002. Held at Gateway Village on the Lincoln Causeway, the market goes from 8am to 12pm and is managed by the not-for-profit organisation Hume Murray Food Bowl. There’s an emphasis on ethical, sustainable and healthy produce that you won’t always find in supermarkets.

The stalls are run by the farmers and producers themselves, so you buy direct and directly support the local economy. It’s a great opportunity to meet the growers and ask questions. Expect more than just seasonal fruit and vegetables, with the markets one of the best places to find artisan products and speciality small goods.

Fill your baskets with goodies from The Peaks cheese, Sweet Desires Cakes and Cupcakes, street food from Haha Vegan and pork products from Rutherglen Berkshire, as well as Milawa Bread, Beechworth Berries and Back to Earth Soaps. Need free-range eggs? Look out for the bright yellow marquee of Goodlookin’ Googees. After some organic honey harvested in the local area? Hachibee Honey has it. The joy really is in walking the length of the market and finding produce from small businesses you’ve never heard of and would never encounter elsewhere.

There are plenty of coffee stalls and breakfast treats, and as always with farmers markets, the early bird does get the worm. Don’t sleep in on market day.
