The Retreat Hotel is a trip back in time. The pub is still adorned with the original tiles and leadlight windows installed in 1915. While the majority of Melbourneβs pubs have been gutted and modernised, the current owners of The Retreat have worked hard to preserve its charm.
Theyβve made updates where necessary. The beer taps pour a range of local beers, including Stomping Ground, located less than a kilometre away. The modest menu sticks to classic pub food, but includes plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options. The corned beef with mustard sauce, veggies and mash is a popular item. Monday is Parma Night.
The hotel was the setting for Australian β70 soap opera The Sullivans. It still draws in nostalgic fans eager to see the set in person.
Like most historic buildings, The Retreat has accumulated a number of stories. Some are convinced a ghost haunts the creaky halls at night. Others say its cosy corners provide an ideal spot for forbidden love affairs. Weβre not sure about either β but itβs undeniably a great place for a quiet drink.
