TL;DR

A Plant-Based Deli With Heart

Smith & Deli is the more casual sibling to Shannon Martinez’s plant-based restaurant, Smith & Daughters, located just next door. This iteration blends the feel of a classic deli with a relaxed, cafeteria-style setup, built around a wraparound food counter fitted with an induction cooktop.

Hot Vegan Comfort Food

You’ll find a rotating line-up of hot vegan mealsβ€”think β€œturkey” pot pie, roast-style β€œbeef” with vegetables, French dip sandwiches and Sri Lankan vegetable curryβ€”all served from enamel pots behind the counter. In the morning, you can build a full vegan breakfast with tofu scramble, plant-based sausages, hash browns and roasted tomatoes, or keep it light with fruit salad, breakfast muffins and parfaits.

Fresh Salads and Sweet Finishes

The cold section offers fresh saladsβ€”sometimes with twists like watermelon in a Greek-style mixβ€”and a changing selection of desserts, from cherry crumble pies to brownies and single-serve trifles.

Drinks, On Tap and Seasonal

There’s also a small drinks offering, with beer and wine on tap and a soda machine by Strangelove pouring seasonal flavours.

Shop While You Eat

Beyond the food counter, the space includes a retail area where you can stock up on plant-based pantry goods, fruit and veg from Northside Fruit & Veg, and bread and pastries from To Be Frank and GF Desserts.

Deli Goods and Take-Home Treats

The deli and carvery section features Shannon’s house-made vegan cold cuts, sausages, cheeses and take-home meals such as spanakopita. You’ll also find a range of made-to-order sandwiches, including β€œchicken” salad, β€œmeatball” subs and Reubens.

Pastries Worth the Visit

Behind the counter, a marble display case is filled with sweet optionsβ€”think pistachio-glazed doughnuts, almond croissants, vanilla slices and tahini-chocolate cookies.
