A Mexican Take on the Aussie Classic
Matt Lane and Nick Peters, the team behind Melbourne favourite Mamasita, describe their second venue as a relaxed, Mexican spin on the classic Aussie fish-and-chip shop. Itβs the kind of place you can drop into for a quick biteβmaybe a couple of tostadas and a cold beerβbefore heading on your way. For the design, they brought in long-time collaborator James Brown of MASH, who gave the space a playful, nostalgic feel.
Retro Charm with a Twist
The interior channels the charm of 1970s taquerias and tostaderias found throughout Mexico. Expect a mix of pastel tiles, red stools, blue banquettes, slow-turning ceiling fans and a few cheeky nods to Catholic iconographyβincluding a mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe and a quote from The Big Lebowski that reads: βNobody fucks with the Jesus.β
Tostadas Front and Centre
Tostadas are the heart of the menu, made in-house using a traditional process where tortillas are dehydrated for 24 hours to achieve that perfect crunch. Toppings change often, but you might find prawn with ginger oil and chilli, tuna with ponzu and wasabi, or mushrooms with smoked avocado. There are also tacos, ceviches, tortas, and crowd-pleasers like grilled corn with black mayo or pickled jalapeΓ±os.
Takeaway and Taco Tuesdays
Thereβs a condensed version of the menu for takeaway, and on Taco Tuesdaze, tacos go for just $2 between 5pm and 9pm.
A Bar for Mezcal Lovers
Behind the bar, PetersβAustraliaβs only certified mezcalierβhas curated a thoughtful list of mezcal and tequila, alongside imported Mexican beers served chelada-style (with lime, ice, and a salted rim). There are also six cocktails on tap, including a Mexican Espresso Martini, a fresh sangria, and the Jesus Maria: a spicy Bloody Mary-style drink topped with crunchy chicken chicharrΓ³n.
