Late-night sushi train in Melbourne's CBD

Don’t let the name fool you—Bossa Nova Sushi might sound like it’s straight out of Brazil, but this sushi train is all about Japanese cuisine with a fresh Melbourne twist. Located on the Spring Street side of Bourke Street, this venture is led by none other than Victor Liong and Con Christopoulos, both legends in their own right. Occupying the former space of Self Preservation bar-gallery and, more recently, Kafeneion, Bossa Nova Sushi breathes new life into the intimate spot with its Rubik’s Cube-style kitchen and sleek brass sushi train. Plates range from $4.80 to $12, made with a blend of premium Yumepirika rice from Hokkaido and Australian Koshihikari rice, seasoned with a vinegar mixture developed in-house.

Intimate restaurant with options ready to eat from the train or specials made-to-order

Liong, the mastermind behind Lee Ho Fook, brings his culinary expertise, while Christopoulos—known for The European, Siglo, and City Wine Shop—adds his signature design flair. The 26-seat setup promises not only high-quality, fresh sushi but, also à la carte specials like grilled wagyu ox-tongue, scallops served on the half shell, and the must-try udon with clams and seaweed butter. Expect a tasty drinks list too, featuring wine, sake and cocktails such as yuzu spritzes and Caipirinhas. Open late from 11:30 am to midnight, Tuesday to Saturday, Bossa Nova Sushi is set to become your new go-to for late-night dining in the CBD.
