From the outside, Andiamo Street Kitchen just looks like a shipping container. You wouldn’t really know – or guess – that some of Wodonga’s best Italian snacks are being made inside of it.
It’s another one of the businesses that make up Junction Place – a former train station that’s been redeveloped into an activated public space. Since opening up here, Andiamo has become a bit of a crowd favourite. And it’s not just among locals: many road-trippers and long-haulers regularly pull off the Hume for a quick bite here.
The kitchen is presided over by Milanese chef Andrea Burgio, who’s been living in the area for over a decade. His menu is about simple crowdpleasers. That means moreish arancini balls; panzerotti (like a savoury fried doughnut with mozzarella and ham), gnocchi; and piadina, a flat-bread that comes with a variety of fillings – typically prosciutto is involved somewhere in the piece.
On the specials board, things can get decidedly un-Italian – dishes such as Baja-style fish tacos make regular appearances. Also not Italian (but still very good): a Thai larb salad and a Dan Dan noodle soup. Once you’ve finished eating, be sure to head next door to Topolino Gelateria, which is owned by the same folks. All of the flavours are great, but it’s tough to look past the classic pistachio.
