Despite multiple owners and guises, Arcadia remains one of Gertrude Street’s longest-serving cafes, and is housed within what is certainly one of the strip’s most storied buildings. At one point it was a men-only haunt for Greek-Macedonian migrants. At another, it was the site of the historic Charles Johnston & Co furniture company, which was devastated by fire in 1963.

But most Fitzroy locals will know it as a buzzing brunch spot, a place where you can reliably get a decent cup of coffee and something restorative to eat after a night on the tiles. These days, it’s a heightened (and healthier) version of that ideal – the result of a complete overhaul in 2021 by then-new owner Grant Turvey.

It still serves eggs every way, smashed avo and hearty burgers. But now there’s a greater emphasis on nutritious options – like a super green salad bowl, smoothies and juices – as well as more dishes catered to vegetarians, vegans and yes, even canines (just ask for the bespoke doggie menu).

Also, the coffee has never been better, courtesy of benchmark Fitzroy roaster, Industry Beans. A solid range of booze includes brunch-friendly cocktails (they’re $10 before midday), packaged and tap beers by the likes of Hawkers, and a concise list of wines starring cask options by eco-friendly Heathcote winery, Hey Tomorrow.

For an additional $40, it’s bottomless wine, beer and cocktails for 90 minutes with the purchase of any main meal – it’s a great warm-weather option if you’re taking in the sunny rear courtyard, or the sights and sounds of Gertrude Street on the footpath out front.
