A good old late night bar sporting character in spades.

In true Brunswick Street style, Bar Open is a little rough around the edges, but don’t let that deter you. A dark interior, small beer garden and intriguing staircase are mere punctuations to the qualities that entice regulars night after night. Walls are clad in a random assortment of artwork, from needlework presidential portraits to curvaceous figures filling empty door and wall spaces. Australian and New Zealand drops dominate the wine list, which is scrawled in chalk above the high bar, with other countries represented if local isn’t your taste. But this is really the sort of place at which you probably want to drink beer.

Wander outside to the little beer garden shrouded in leafy trees and be transported from the cluster of busy neighbouring nightspots. Head upstairs to ease into the week; Screen Sect on Monday nights pays homage to cult classic films with entry only $5. Or come on Tuesday night for Make It Up Club, a weekly shout-out to local and international musical improvisation and exploration of experimental genres, textures and sounds.

Indeed, if live music is what you’re after, Bar Open is known for its wide variety of touring and local musicians. A melting pot of genres sees reggae, jazz, rock, grunge and soul define this intimate, upbeat venue. High energy, late hours and loyal patrons keep Bar Open a favourite along the hectic Brunswick Street strip.
