A Biodynamic Haven on the Bay
Nestled on the tranquil edge of Swan Bay, Basils Farm is a biodynamic vineyard, permaculture garden, cellar door, and café — all rolled into one idyllic destination.
Two Labels, One Vision
Basils Farm crafts wines under two labels: the eponymous Basils Farm and Kiltynane Estate, which originated in the Yarra Valley in 1997. Founder Kate Kirkhope, initially a biodynamic consultant at Basils Farm, relocated her entire operation here after the 2009 bushfires, bringing her commitment to biodynamic principles with her.
Minimal Intervention, Maximum Character
Grapes are cultivated using biodynamic methods, then pressed in small batches employing wild fermentation, some whole bunching, and minimal intervention. The result is a carefully crafted range of aromatic whites and reds.
Warmth, Charm, and Seasonal Fare
The cellar door and café are housed in a charming old cottage, warmed by a fireplace during winter. Visitors can also enjoy lunch on the sun-drenched lawn or unwind by the outdoor fire pit.
Straight from the Garden
On-site permaculture garden manager Ben Shaw grows seasonal produce that supplies the kitchen. The orchard overflows with figs, quinces, plums, grapefruit, olives, and lemons. Fresh vegetables are picked, preserved, and paired with Ravens Creek pasture-raised cured meats, Bellarine Manzanillo olives, and Drysdale cheeses on generous antipasto platters.
Garden to Plate, with Heart
Dishes like braised pork belly with potato rösti, bacon, and cabbage showcase the rich flavours born from this garden-to-plate philosophy. Organic coffee from Ocean Grind in Torquay, served with Schulz organic milk from Timboon, rounds out the experience.
A Farm with Purpose
Beyond the farm, Basils leases adjoining land where the team is actively regenerating the environment by planting indigenous trees to restore soil health and protect the wetland ecosystem. It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely post-lunch stroll.
