This mostly flat, 23-kilometre track follows the old Wonthaggi rail line, which serviced the region’s coal industry until the late 1970s. Historic mining remnants dot the repurposed route, and there’s native heathland, verdant farms and the rugged Bass Strait coastline to soak in as you glide past. The official rail trail stretches from the old Wonthaggi railway station to the Woolamai racecourse near Anderson, though from here you could peddle a little further and reach Phillip Island. Pause for a picnic at the mouth of the Powlett River before traversing the Bourne Creek trestle bridge. The trail accommodates horse riders and walkers too.
