Mexican with a San Francisco flavour.

Gary Mink missed The Mission. The San Franciscan expat couldn’t find the burritos he desired; so he decided to give up his job in IT and make them himself.

So became Bay City Burritos, a southside taqueria engineered especially to mimic the fast food and aesthetics of San Fran’s Mission district.

For the menu, Mink concentrated on doing the basics right: tortillas imported especially from San Francisco, marinated meats and sauces prepared fresh on premises daily, and locally-sourced vegetables. The standout, of course, is the enormous Bay City Burrito itself, with saucy pork carnitas, flour tortilla, Spanish rice, black beans and a devastatingly spicy ‘nuclear’ hot sauce (don’t worry, it’s non-compulsory).

Mexican standards like pan-fried prawn tacos in a chipotle dressing; soma quesadillas with fresh house-made guacamole and all day huevos rancheros make for slightly more modest fare. And, vegetarians – even vegans – are well catered for, with non-omnivorous alternatives available for every item on the list.

The joint’s fully licensed, too, so you’ll be able enjoy Baja cuisine as intended: with a Pacifico in hand.

And, for those game roosters who think they can handle their chilli, why not ask for a dash of the ‘ghost chilli’ salsa, kept in a sealed box behind the counter?
