Darren Murphy has run Bendigo Wholefoods since 2007, but its history extends much further back. The grocer arrived on Lyttleton Terrace in 1988. The nursery and cafe are more-recent additions.
Collectively, the place has some serious eco cred. It’s conscious of food miles (sourcing mostly from within 150 kilometres of the city) and composts its waste. The shop’s range is extensive, including bulk nuts and grains, organic spices, eco cleaning products, toiletries, condiments, fresh produce and a large selection of gluten-free goods. It also has a solid global-food section. It’s a mindful alternative to your usual supermarket.
The cafe menu has been written with gluten-free, sugar-free, vegan and paleo eating in mind. Try one of its signature “wholebowls” – a salad with a perfect ratio of colour and crunch to make clean-eating enjoyable – paired with a smoothie and vegan treat for dessert.
It’s a modern and bright space, with plenty of seating – though it gets a little squishy during the lunchtime rush. Nursery seating means you can enjoy your bowl of health in the sunshine (and minus the bustle), among the cascading watermelon and zucchini plants.
