There are many great walks and waterfalls to explore out of Kyneton, but for those looking for an easy stroll closer to town, this is your best bet.
Start the walk at the river crossing on Burton Avenue, located at the west end of Piper Street. From here, follow the winding path north along the river through open grasslands, over a footbridge and past a mix of indigenous and exotic trees.
Along the way, look out for little information plaques, which provide insight into sites such as the historic, 1800s pig shelter (now a picnic shelter). Bird watchers will be rewarded with native black and wood ducks, parrots and white ibis. The river is habitat to platypuses, too.
Continue along the river until you reach the Botanic Gardens on Mollison Street. The gardens were established in 1858, when cultivating formal gardens and promenading were highly valued pastimes. It’s an ideal spot for a picnic, especially so if you packed a hamper from Piper Street Food Co. beforehand.
Take the same route back to finish at Piper Street with an estimated return time of about two hours, if walked leisurely.
