This totally remarkable Seddon cafe is named after a totally unremarkable small silver fish.

From head to toe, Common Galaxia presents itself as a considered space: the warm but understated interior, the cutlery and menu caddies hanging individually from tables, the leather and timber chairs made by locals LifeSpaceJourney, the pour-over rack and timber stools all point to a keen attention to detail.

Initially a venture of Luke Mutton and Kylie Mackinlay, the couple behind Dead Man Espresso in South Melbourne, the cafe has since gone to new management.

The menu offers all the breakfast staples – but with locally sourced ingredients and unexpected twists on each item. For lunch there is a selection of smorrebrod (Danish open sandwiches) with sophisticated ingredients such as roasted pork with apple, braised cabbage and fennel jam; or eggplant caviar, pickled pumpkin, brussel sprouts and chevre.

As it should be; coffee is a focus, with offerings from staple suppliers Seven Seeds and Market Lane taking centre stage. And for those wanting something more than a paper cup to take away, there is the cleverly crafted coffee caddy again from locals LifeSpaceJourney.
