While not as well-concealed as its sibling, New Gold Mountain, Double Happiness still prides itself on being for those in the know. Its regulars would likely hope it stays this way.
Aptly named after the traditional Chinese character for joy and happiness, Chinese ornamental designs are dominant, and a plethora of communist propaganda such as posters, statues and trinkets pay tribute to Chairman Mao. This is a true hole-in-the-wall and is delightfully intimate with decor inspired by its location on the cusp of the city’s bustling Chinatown.
The staff are friendly, efficient and more than happy to recommend a beverage from the menu, or tailor one to suit your tastes. Tongue-in-cheek cocktails, such as the Great Leap Forward infused with lychee vodka, mint, lime and ginger are worth a try, as are the chilli and plum martinis.
For those keeping it simple, Tsingtao and Tiger beers are also available. If you’re craving a little something extra, bar snacks are at hand – we recommend the homemade steamed dumplings.
The atmosphere varies from a louder hip and stylish crowd sampling spicy drinks, to groups huddling around the cosy, central open fire creating subtle hums of conversation. All in all, this welcoming den makes for a good night, regardless of whether you’re looking for a quiet night “in” catching up with old friends, or a platform to kick off your night on the town.
