A pocket-sized cafe from a design duo.

*Flipboard has moved to Monash University Building K, 900 Dandenong Road, Caulfield East. We will update our profile shortly.

Architect Martin Heide and interior designer Megg Evans saw potential in the three metre-wide, three story-high gap in between their studio, Brolly Design, and the emergency exit for jazz institution Bennetts Lane.

Together they designed and built this 20 square metre split-level cafe themselves. Built around a gravity-defying central stairwell, there’s a small meeting space on the top floor, and the metre-wide, middle level features cleverly-designed seats made from old magazine collections sandwiched together by flats of wood.

On the ground level barista Lincoln Walker (ex-Wide Open Road, Ray) occupies a small corner alongside a La Marzocco coffee machine, some beans from artisan roaster Josh Bailey, half a metre of bench space and not a whole lot else.

The lunch offering is light – a few basic baguettes are made on site for the peckish, and there’s a standout selection of gluten free treats from Miss Si. They’re open from 7am every weekday morning, so get up early to nab one of the wooden nooks built into the exterior of the building, soak up the sunrise and watch the office crowd rush by.
