A New Chapter for a Beloved Space
Florian is a cosy café in Rathdowne Village, located where the much-loved Rathdowne Street Food Store once stood. It later became Small Victories before Dom Gattermayr and Rose Richards took it over in early 2021. They’ve kept some of the charm from the past—like the original raised landing affectionately known as “the balcony”—and added warm touches such as glossy burgundy tiles and shelves stocked with cookbooks and house-made pickles.
A Fresh, Seasonal Approach to Brunch
The menu is simple, seasonal, and focused on fresh ingredients. It changes often, but a few favourites stick around, like the popular gravlax dish (cured Tasmanian salmon with whipped ricotta, soft-boiled egg, tarragon, radish, and rye bread) and Eggs Florian—a twist on eggs Florentine with soft-boiled eggs, kale, Comté cheese, and bearnaise sauce on rye from Gattermayr's family bakery, Austro.
A Farmer’s Breakfast Worth Waking Up For
One highlight is the Farmer’s Breakfast: a generous spread of cured meats (sourced locally from Donati’s), cheese, boiled eggs, pickles, rye bread, and yoghurt with fruit compote. Other dishes include rotating salads and sandwiches that change with the seasons—like crumbed sardines with heirloom tomatoes or a fresh calamari salad with white beans, fennel, and grapefruit.
Local Drinks and Sweet Finishes
Drinks come from local favourites: coffee by Allpress, tea from Assembly, and sodas from Strangelove. For something sweet, try the whipped yoghurt with fresh fruit, puffed grains, and nuts, or a croissant or fruit toast with house-made preserves.
Honest Food, Made to Be Enjoyed
Florian is all about good food made with care—not for show, but to be genuinely enjoyed. You can even take home some of their pickles, jams, and specialty seasonings.
