A Taste of Milan in Melbourne
Hereโs the scoop: Milan-born chef Luigi โGigiโ Pozzoli found it tough to locate the authentic gelato he grew up with after moving to Melbourne in 2020. So, in 2022, he and his wife Sue Yong opened the bright, airy Gigiโs Gelato in Yarraville Village. The gelateria offers both traditional and inventive gelati, alongside cakes and dairy-free sorbets.
Gelato Served with Heart
Youโll often find Sue Yong at the front, scooping gelato and sorbet from the gleaming stainless-steel pozzetti. The flavour lineup includes classics like fior di latte, hazelnut, and pistachio, as well as creative options like pumpkin pie with amaretti biscuits.
From Scratch, with Inspiration
In the kitchen, Pozzoli crafts everything from scratch, introducing new flavours daily inspired by his mood or experiences. One standout is the pancake-flavoured gelato, inspired by his time working as a travelling salesman in the US, infused with strawberries and maple syrup.
Nostalgia in Every Scoop
Other creations pay homage to his childhood, like a rich cherry-chocolate gelato inspired by the classic Italian Il Boero. This flavour features tart cherries soaked in Maraschino liqueur for 40 days folded into chocolate gelatoโa hit with regulars who miss it on the days itโs not available.
Finishing Touches
All flavours can be enjoyed in a cup or cone, with the option to have cones dipped in 70% dark chocolate flowing straight from the fountain.
