Grampians Ale Works: From Wine Bar to Brewery Hub
Grampians Ale Works didnβt have a single beer on tap when it first rolled up its doors in 2021. It was the Easter long weekend, a time when Stawell comes alive with tourists flocking to the annual Gift Race.
A Clever Beginning
With their taproom nearly complete and a unique opportunity at hand, owners Shawna and Michael Dominelli β both former winemakers β decided to open as a wine bar, simply to draw people in.
A True Taproom Today
These days, while wine is still available, the space has fully embraced its role as a taproom. A German-style pilsner and a rye pale ale are poured daily, and the Dominellis have plans to expand the range with a witbier, an IPA, and a dark ale series. The focus is on incorporating as many locally sourced beer-making ingredients as possible β showcasing malt from Ballarat and bitter hops grown just outside Ararat. Until their own distillery is up and running, the drinks list is rounded out with regional spirits, like Fosseyβs Gin from Mildura.
Welcoming Vibes and Local Flavour
Happy hour runs from 5pm to 6pm every Friday β the perfect time to grab a seat at the long communal table inside the cozy bar. There's an on-site kitchen, though food trucks make regular weekend appearances.
A Striking Space in Stawell
Housed in a former drycleaner, the building offers just the right mix of space and industrial charm to accommodate both a brewery and a tasting bar. One standout feature? A bold mural reading βGreetings from Stawellβ stretches along the side of the Ale Worksβ facade, making the venue instantly recognizable.
