Since it was founded in 1978, Greville Records has become a Melbourne institution. It’s been the topic of a number of documentaries and has its own Lonely Planet profile. The store is famous among musicians too, with the likes of Sonic Youth, R.E.M., Radiohead and The Beastie Boys all stopping by for in-store shows and visits over the years.
Not much has changed today. Music-obsessed owner Warwick Brown (who took over in 1991) has continued championing rare and independent records, stocking everything from 1920s blues originals to new electronica pressings. The walls are covered in priceless prints, photos and paraphernalia.
The store houses more than 20,000 LPs and 10,000 seven-inch singles. There’s no listening station, but Brown and the staff will happily tell you anything you need to know.
Records aside, Brown has an equally impressive collection of CDs, DVDs, T-shirts, books, and vintage tour posters for sale.
