A staff member’s reaction mid-taste test inspired the name of this low-key sandwich spot. Alongside no-nonsense sangas (with pickles or crisps on the side), locals return for its coffee, juice and bits and bobs for the pantry.

The name was a natural fit for this neighbourhood deli. Owner Nana Addo chose it after an employee’s candid reaction during a taste test. Since then he’s grown the humble sandwich spot into a mainstay for locals – with fast-moving lines out the door on weekends.

Addo moved from fashion into hospitality for his love of people. Here, it’s his warmth and friendliness that regulars return for just as much as the competitively priced sandwiches. You’ll spot him most days chitchatting with regulars over the pass.

The straightforward sandwich menu, which is constantly being perfected through customer feedback, reduces choice paralysis. Among crowd-pleasing Reubens and tuna melts is Addo’s favourite: chicken pesto (which prompted the deli’s naming), a sourdough number loaded with chicken breast, pickles, pesto, mayonnaise, roasted capsicum and Swiss cheese. Each option comes with a side of crisps or pickles. There’s also coffee from Roasting Warehouse, and a tempting array of pastries at the counter.

The fit-out is stripped-back, with light timber, blues and whites. If you want to dine in, snag a stool by the large windows, or push through the deli-style PVC flap doors to the small curb-side tables. Feature shelving shows off a range of local pantry items, like fresh bread, chilli oils, hot sauces and pickles.
