This modern Australian eatery in a grand old corner building is all about showcasing seasonal food from local suppliers and producers – whether you’re coming for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Seasonal food from local supplies is the remit for this modern Australian eatery inside a grand 1870s corner building. Done up with art deco touches and exposed brick, the name is an homage to Ballarat’s first restaurateur, John Alloo, who opened a restaurant on the newly minted goldfields in 1854.

It’s a local favourite, and the casual restaurant shapeshifts effortlessly from breakfast to lunch to dinner, becoming Johnnys After Dark on Friday and Saturday nights.

Chef Andy Gale trained at the Michelin-starred Chez Bruce restaurant in London and works with local growers and foragers to showcase the region’s produce.

For dinner, the chef’s five-course tasting menu ($75 per person) is the pick. Expect dishes such as Murray cod with artichoke puree; ham hock croquettes with salsa verde; pork belly with burnt apple, miso puree, gorgonzola, sorrel and fennel; and salted organic kale with black garlic vinaigrette.

Breakfast is a lively affair; the room fills up quickly on weekends. Try the anchovy chilli scramble or The Tradesman (otherwise known as a gourmet bacon and egg roll). Coffee is from Sensory Lab and Wood & Co.

Look for the iconic 1870’s building with a 60’s interior vibe. Cafe by day, modern Italian diner by night – this local favourite serves  speciality coffee, a thoughtful wine list and absolutely beautiful food.

Named after Ballarat’s first restaurateur “Johnny Alloo”, our aim is to connect people and bring joy through great food and beverage experiences, just like Johnny did. Our philosophy revolves around attention to detail, thoughtful design and a considered menu, to friendly and attentive service. We always remember that great hospitality allows people to connect.

Originally built in the 1870’s, “Johnnys” underwent a transformation that lasted 14 months over 2018-19. This included exposing the beautiful solid brickwork, opening up the space and an inside-out redecoration with a contemporary take on the mid century & art deco design styles. We are very proud of what we have accomplished with this iconic building.

Owned and operated by Ballarat local Matthew Freeman, who has applied his touch to every facet of Johnnys which is a culmination of many years in the hospitality industry and a love for great design. He is passionate about what great hospitality can mean for relationships and communities, just like Johnny was.
