Long Story Short is a personal obsession turned shop. Owners Matthew Sigley and Isobel Monsbourgh like to joke that as their collection continues to grow tall, they’ll grow old and short.
It’s a decent collection. There’s rare vinyl, second-hand books, designer knitwear from the ‘’50s, ‘’60s and ‘’70s and possibly the biggest boom box in Australia (sadly not for sale).
Sigley has a strong musical background, having worked as a TV and radio sound technician. He’s also a member of four different bands, spanning alternative rock and synth pop.
The shop’s name is taken from Spandau Ballet’s first album, Journey to Glory, released in 1981. It features a track named To Cut a Long Story Short, which Sigley thought was a great name for a shop.
For some, it’s a nostalgic trip through the decades, revisiting CDs and retro household knick-knacks they grew up with. For others it’s educational rummaging through Australia’s history, piece-by-piece, coming across a VCR box set of Blue Heelers or a glam apple ice-bucket.
