A classic beachfront pub with a vibing beer garden and ocean views.

It’s a rare Lorne resident who hasn’t downed a cold one at the Lorne Hotel. The Duncan brothers founded the pub in 1876 and it’s still going strong. These days, the site includes a bistro, pokies area and photo booth.

There’s nothing fancy about this one. It offers the usual pub basics such as Carlton Draught and Fat Yak on tap, and bistro meals such as chicken parmigianas, schnitzels, steaks and chips at a reasonable price point.

But that’s not what people come for. The star of the pub is its famous rooftop beer garden. It’s adorned with umbrellas, coloured bunting and fake grass. In summer, tables are packed and the bar is in full swing. The rooftop kitchen, Joe’s Pizzeria, serves classic combos that go nicely with a cold drink. This type of convivial atmosphere can’t be manufactured.

It’s here people flock for a post-swim beer, to enjoy the breathtaking view of the beach. Almost all the seating overlooks the ocean – including that in the dining room. Huge glass windows make it a good spot to enjoy a peaceful pub meal during winter, when most of the holidaymakers have cleared out.
