A Coffee-Focused Spin-Off of a Matcha Favourite
Lunar by Hikari is the sibling café to the CBD’s popular Hikari, which is known for its matcha and hojicha (roasted green tea). But at Lunar, the focus shifts to coffee.
A Curated Coffee Experience
The menu features an impressive selection of pour-over brews, using beans from 10 different Japanese roasters, including Kyoto’s Weekenders Coffee and Coyote Coffee. If you’re after something stronger, the espresso drinks are made with blends from Path in North Melbourne and Code Black Coffee in Brunswick. For something refreshing, try the yuzu coffee spritz—a zesty mix of cold brew, sparkling water, and Japanese yuzu syrup.
Sweets with a Japanese Twist
The coffee pairs perfectly with a range of Japanese-inspired sweets, like matcha cream and red bean mochi-covered strawberries, light and fluffy chiffon cakes, and a rich yuzu Basque cheesecake made with yuzu juice from Kochi, Japan.
Savoury Bites Worth the Trip
On the savoury side, don’t miss the mentaiko onigiri—a rice ball with a savoury burst of cod roe—or the standout prawn katsu sando, where juicy prawn is coated in a crispy crumb and tucked between slices of soft white bread.
