Marama: A Local Love Letter to Wine, Produce and Community

Hospitality veteransβ€”and cousinsβ€”Tom Gunn (Capitano, Proud Mary) and Grace Dowell (Proud Mary) have created a venue that’s as thoughtful as it is inviting. At Marama, their stylish neighbourhood wine bar, everything points localβ€”from the Victorian-focused wine list to the produce sourced just kilometres away.

Small Plates, Big Heart

The share-style menu is built around seasonal ingredients and classic-with-a-twist flavours. Think zucchini flowers stuffed with goat’s curd, steak tartare with house potato chips, or barramundi with romesco and crispy Tuscan kale. Even the butter for the focaccia, baked by nearby Wild Life Bakery, is infused with maple leaf. The warm hospitality echoes the foodβ€”unfussy and generous, grounded in the kind of place where you’re remembered after one visit.

All Things Local, Poured with Purpose

The drinks list is a celebration of small Victorian makers. There’s Banks Brewing pilsner on tap, Bodriggy cans, and an ever-evolving wine selection from the likes of Latta, Mac Forbes, and Little Rara. Classic cocktails are reimagined using Australian spiritsβ€”like Four Pillars olive leaf gin or Spring Bay single malt from Tasmania.

Industrial Romance

Marama’s fit-out channels industrial Manhattan, brought to life by Gunn’s partner and Dowell’s father. Polished concrete, brushed white plaster, and a moody charcoal and blood orange palette set the tone, with a wraparound velveteen banquette giving the space its signature softness. A neighbourhood bar with fine-dining finesse and real heart, Marama makes a case for slow evenings, shared plates, and wines that tell a local story.
