Cafe number six for one of the city’s favourite coffee roasters.

A good coffee always improves a weekend shop. This Market Lane outlet might not be in South Melbourne Market, but it’s so close that it may as well be. Step out of the organics section, cross Coventry Street and look for the dusky blue shopfront inspired by the washing channels and flotation tanks found in many Rwandan coffee-washing stations.

In the Hearth Studio interior, baristas work behind an attractive French elm counter designed and built by Arteveneta, against a backdrop of soft light globes and more dusky blue tiles. The shop’s few indoor and outdoor seats are also made of elm, which adds a nice sense of warmth.

Like the first five Market Lane cafes (Melbourne can’t seem to get enough), this one offers a small range of pastries and home-brewing equipment. But it’s really all about that coffee. Seasonal blends and single origins roasted at the Prahran HQ are served as espresso or filter. However you take it, though, it’s guaranteed to make your market visit better.
