A Taste of Ethiopia in Northcote

At Mesob, owners Naz Mahari and Dawit Kebede invite you into their cultureβ€”through soulful Ethiopian dishes, warm hospitality, and vibrant interiors. On weekends, the cosy space hums with the sound of live jazz, adding to the atmosphere.

Shared Plates and Traditional Flavours

The menu centres on communal eating, with richly spiced lentil and meat stews served atop injeraβ€”a tangy, gluten-free, fermented flatbread. No cutlery needed here: diners tear off injera by hand to scoop up bites, the traditional and interactive way to enjoy Ethiopian food.

Dining Tables Made from Tradition

This is Mahari and Kebede’s first restaurant, named after the mesobβ€”a woven Ethiopian basket used for storing and serving injera. The namesake baskets even form the base of intimate two-person tables, while larger groups gather around long timber communal tables.

A Space That Feels Like Home

Mesob is filled with cultural character: a bar styled like a straw hut, walls adorned with handmade crafts, paintings, and statuesβ€”many personally collected from Ethiopia. Every corner tells a story.

Hospitality From the Heart

What truly sets Mesob apart is the genuine warmth of its owners. Mahari and Kebede greet guests at the door and farewell them personally, creating a sense of connection that makes every visit feel special.
