Once a creperie, this intimate French bistro is bringing a slice of Brittany to the Mornington Peninsula. Look for the blue-and-white awning, and be rewarded with classic dishes, Breton specialties, and small-producer French wines with a focus on Burgundy.

Seasoned peninsula veterans may remember Soeur, a classic Breton creperie with the blue-and-white striped awning on Mornington’s main drag. Brittany native Cesar Henry (ex-France Soir) and his brother Oscar have transformed the old business into an intimate bistro, making the most of the tiny two-person kitchen to create a menu of classic French dishes and Breton specialties.

Like the space, the menu here is small and comforting, with around six options each for entrees, mains and desserts. You might start with eye-fillet beef tartare or a classic French onion soup closed with a flaky pastry lid. Follow up with duck a l’orange or market fish with butter sauce, plus sides including a Provençal ratatouille and pommes frites.

When it comes to crepes, you can’t go past the Breton-style savoury galletes or dessert options, which include a signature apple and salted caramel crepe set aflame with apple brandy. There’s also a classic creme brulee, and chocolate mousse with a buttery Breton cake for dessert.

The wine list is also short but exceptional. In a departure from the Peninsula-heavy wine lists in the area, Henry works exclusively with Mosaique Wines to showcase small, organic French drops you won’t find elsewhere. There’s a big focus on wines from Burgundy, plus a smattering of French-leaning cocktails and aperitifs.
