This much-loved bakery stocks some of Melbourne’s best (and most inventive) croissants. They’re baked every few hours and filled with flavours like strawberry cheesecake and Golden Gaytime. Plus, find savoury pastries, cakes, cruffins and brews from Axil Coffee Roasters.

Penny for Pound is a popular bakery with spots in Richmond, Moorabbin and Camberwell. Here, you’ll find all its inventive vienoisserie (think strawberry cheesecake croissants), comforting cakes and takeaway loaves.

The Camberwell outpost is set up in an old-school corner shop, hidden away from busy Camberwell Junction. The flatiron building, painted in the bakery’s signature sage green, is hard to miss. Inside, it’s a cosy light-filled space with room for 20 people. If you can get a spot, sit in with a croissant and coffee, which comes courtesy of Axil Coffee Roasters.

You can always count on its plain flaky croissants, which are baked on-site every few hours. Yet the rest of the vienoisserie menu changes regularly, meaning you’ll often find an interesting new spin-off to try. Favourites have included a twice-baked Bounty croissant; a Golden Gaytime croissant; a ricotta and honey cruffin with cannoli wafer; and a Basque cheesecake and strawberry confit knot. There are plenty of cakes too, spanning classics such as carrot through to the more inventive lychee and raspberry cake.

But it’s not all about the sweets. Savoury options could include a basil pesto scroll with pistachio and goat’s cheese; a prosciutto and gruyere croissant; or garlic and cauliflower gratin. Plus, there are plenty of loaves for stocking up your home supply. Choose between seven varieties, including olive loaves, sesame seed loaves and very French baguettes.
