Croissants are baked four times a day at this popular bakery, which has been a locals’ favourite since 2018. Go for its hot coffee alongside doughnuts, fancy cakes by the slice, boeuf bourguignon pies and pork and fennel sauso rolls.

Since 2018, much-loved bakery Penny for Pound has supplied croissants and bread to a steady stream of Richmond locals. The bakery, from pastry chef Matilda Smith (ex-Merivale, Aunty Peg’s) and partner Ben Wilson, is known for its excellent viennoiserie, including perfectly buttery croissants and danishes.

Plain croissants are baked four times a day, so if you time it right, you can have one warm from the oven. If you’re up for something a little more decadent, you might opt for a twice-baked red velvet croissant, a marzipan-glazed pecan croissant or a passionfruit and cacao nib doughnut. The team’s also selling carrot cake and twice-baked chocolate cake by the slice, and three varieties of hot cross bun: traditional fruit, sticky date and chocolate.

In addition to seven types of sourdough and Smith’s croissants and glistening danishes, there’s an espresso machine and a sizeable menu serving up toasted sandwiches, salads, and pork, fennel and apple sausage rolls. Boeuf bourguignon pies are also baked on-site, along with a vegetarian counterpart featuring chipotle, beans and Monterey Jack cheese. You can enjoy all of them here or take them away.

The Bridge Road site is just around the corner from its original location behind Mayday. It’s easy to find on the bustling Richmond strip, just look for the signature Penny for Pound pink-and-green branding and jaunty golden crown. Its stores in Camberwell and vast HQ in Moorabbin are also worth a visit.
