A beachfront breakfast spot with a healthy, inventive menu.

Surfer and ex-Seven Seeds barista Tom Sereika wanted a cafe on the water, so he opened Pond opposite the beach in his hometown of Torquay. It’s a relaxed space with large glass windows and doors that stream sunlight inside.

Naturally the coffee is from Seven Seeds (espresso or filter), but there’s also an extensive drinks menu that features cold-pressed juices and options such as the Simply Spritz, a refreshing glass of sparkling water with a touch of lemon and a sprig of rosemary.

Pond’s food menu is creative and mostly healthy, if you discount the pork-belly tacos. The chicken burger is stacked tall with salad and served in a black bun. The smashed avocado comes topped with peanut brittle. Unique lunch dishes such as beef bibimbap (soba noodles with beef brisket and a poached egg) stand out.

Pond is a popular post-surf spot for Torquay locals, but it also attracts those at the start of a Great Ocean Road trip. If you’re coming from Melbourne, Torquay is generally the first stop.
