Floating on the Yarra in the concrete jungle of Melbourne’s CBD.

Ponyfish Island is the end result of a collaboration between three men about town: Grant Smilie from 360 agency, Andrew Mackinnon of the Taboo Group and hospitality guru Jerome Borazio of Sister Bella and 1000 Pound Bend.

The trio created an unusual venue, only accessible from a single stairwell, located on the water under the Yarra Pedestrian Footbridge (connecting Southbank to Flinders Street station).

The fit-out was completed by the team at Moth Design; the group behind Penthouse Mouse and contributors to design conference Semi-Permanent. They converted the small, sterile space into a floating bar. Recycled timber, shipping palettes remodelled into stools, hessian sack covers and wooden planter boxes filled with hardy green plants set the scene for the modern nautical restaurant/cafe/bar.

With a simple menu, the kitchen is open from dawn to dusk and churns out breakfast, lunch and dinner. Start the day with waffles or smashed avocado on toast. Drop by for lunch or stop for dinner and tuck into quesadillas or toasties.
