A Trip Back to the '70s
Reload Records feels like a trip back to the 1970sβand in many ways, it is.
Owner Craig βBreedloveβ Gawthorne has been part of the vinyl scene since 1976, having run or owned seven record stores, including Relic Records in Prahran and the original Reload in Richmond.
Rosebud Roots and Retirement Plans
He moved Reload to Rosebud in 2007 as an early step toward retirement, preferring the relaxed pace outside the city.
Since then, Reload has remained the Mornington Peninsulaβs only dedicated record store, with a collection tailored to broad, local tastes.
A Vast and Varied Collection
The store holds around 6,000 CDs and 7,000 vinyl records, spanning rock, psychedelia, blues, jazz, soul, world music, soundtracks, and electronica.
You might spot a second-hand copy of Master of Puppets beside a fresh London Grammar pressingβall competitively priced, even against big retailers like JB Hi-Fi.
Mixtapes, Memorabilia, and a Musical Time Capsule
One of Reloadβs standout touches is its constant stream of curated mixtapes.
Gawthorne has been crafting playlists nearly as long as heβs sold records, and music plays nonstop in-store to maintain the vibe.
With walls covered in posters, sleeves, and memorabilia, the store feels more like a time capsule than a shopβrich in history, personality, and sound.
