From Pop-Up to Permanent
Rocco's Bologna Discoteca started as a popular pop-up during lockdown, winning over fans with its saucy Italian sandwiches.
The demand was so strong that owners Emilio Scalzo and Zoë Rubino (of Poodle Bar & Bistro) decided to make it a permanent fixture on Gertrude Street.
A Space That Feels Like Home
The two-storey space, with its warm amber-wood accents and curtain-covered windows, feels like a cross between a classic Italian trattoria and a visit to Nonna’s house.
Sandwiches by Day
By day, chef Federico Carnevale (formerly of Neptune) serves up Rocco’s much-loved sandwiches—especially the signature meatball sub and the crispy fried-bologna sandwich, which also makes an appearance at dinner.
Italian Comfort Food by Night
In the evening, the menu expands to include hearty Italian-style dishes like pizza bianca topped with burnt honey and rosemary, Milanese risotto, and a selection of house-made pastas.
Sweet Finishes and House Grappa
For a lighter finish, you can enjoy a plate of house-made cheese or a swirl of pistachio soft serve.
And if you’re in the mood for something stronger, try the in-house grappa, infused with seasonal flavours like loganberry, peach and rosemary, or lemon verbena.
