Shawcross Pizza is the brainchild of Matthew John and Damien Thompson, the guys that also own the Phat Brats hot dog shop next door. The pizza venture popped up after Iva Dawkins joined the pair, as a third business partner.
The trio sells pizza ‘New York style by the slice’ (cut from 22-inch pizzas, they’re more like slabs than slices) or whole 12-inch pizzas and everything is available eat-in or takeaway. The toppings are mostly interesting combinations and also include Italian classics, although what we consider a Margherita is known here as the Fat Tony. The most popular pizza, according to John, is the Broseppi topped with sausage, mozzarella, artichokes, salami and mushroom. Even vegans are looked after (it is Fitzroy after all) with the Bloody Vegans pizza topped with hummus, spinach, tomato, green olives and lemon.
The ‘Kick-Ass Salads’ section is a highlight, with seasonal salads built on ‘superfood’ ingredients like quinoa, pumpkin and spinach and are proving a great alternative to the pizzas and gaining their own following.
Shawcross encourages BYO and is open until “at least 1am” on Friday and Saturday nights. Here is another option for satisfying late night offerings on Brunswick St.
