If you consider eating eggs Benedict at church on Sunday to be blasphemous, Sister Mary Louise might not be for you. But for everyone else, this family-run cafe is heaven-sent, with a menu of brunch classics served inside a converted former church across the road from the Four Pillars gin distillery.
Enter the building and you’ll be met with a spacious dining room flooded with natural light, original hardwood floors, a fireplace and a Sonsie Studios mural of the cafe’s namesake – an American Benedictine nun who advocated for the rights of people with a disability and the queer community during the ’80s and ’90s.
In keeping with the inclusive spirit, the menu offers plenty of gluten-free and vegan options. Otherwise, it’s classic brunch fare (including an eggs Benedict on brioche) and innovative dishes such as prawn toast served with black fungus and wilted greens. The lunch menu covers burgers, bao and a roast cauliflower and chickpea salad. You can also grab Reuben sandwiches, mushroom and mozzarella toasties, and daily pastries to take away.
Along with Silva coffee, you can pair your brunch with local beer on tap or a seasonal boozy creation. Think fresh berry sorbet with triple sec and sparkling wine, and a classic Bloody Mary.
