Slow Waves is a collection of independent international labels curated by Marli Atterton. It’s a destination store, hidden on the fourth floor of a building at the Paris end of Collins Street.
Atterton is a former stylist, visual merchandiser and fashion retail all-rounder who opened Slow Waves at the end of 2015 to fill the gap between high street and luxury brands.
There are three rooms in the Collins Street space. The first is for emerging designers, the second for more established names and a third for jewellery. Atterton doesn’t want shoppers to feel intimidated and is often on hand to take you through the eclectic mix of labels.
The buying is guided by what Atterton can see herself and her friends wearing – the only requisite is that the clothes are contemporary, wearable and evoke a certain attitude. On the rack, that can range from Maison Margiela’s cleanly tailored pieces to Faustine Steinmetz’s oversized artisan denim. Price points vary wildly too.
Slow Waves is currently the exclusive Melbourne stockist for Caitlin Price, Alex Mullins, Marieyat, KYE, Y/Project, Ambush, Jiwinaia, Filles A Papa and Faustine Steinmetz. Atterton also carries a selection of MM6 Maison Margiela, Ann-Sofie Back and Common Projects.
