An affordable and satisfying breakfast spot in Carnegie.

A fierce favourite among Carnegie locals, Spilt Milk is a cafe that loves its regulars but will make a newcomer feel at home in seconds. The décor is strikingly raw, with plenty of wooden furnishings, bare brick walls and a stone floor, but the combined effect is cosy rather than overtly industrial.

The feel continues on the menu, where all dishes are named after animals. Sometimes it’s quite logical (the Bear is a perfect winter porridge topped with blueberries, cinnamon and honey), and sometimes less so (the Zebra is olive sourdough served with onion jam, bacon, smashed avocado, ricotta and herbs).

Spilt Milk’s slightly tweaked range of classic brunch options make it a good drop-in spot for winter comfort food or a hangover remedy that still feels classy. There are a handful of lunch dishes and a soup of the day available too.

Coffee is given plenty of attention too – you can choose from two different blends or try the filtered slow drip if you have five or 10 minutes to spare.
