Single-origin coffee and a tale of cold-blooded murder come together at this long-standing Brunswick Street Cafe.

Stagger Lee is a song first recorded in 1923, telling the tale of the murder of William “Billy” Lyons by “Stag” Lee Shelton. More than 400 artists have put their own spin on the song since. It’s also the name of this cafe, opened in 2014 and still keeping up with the Joneses.

Stagger Lee’s offers a concise but exciting menu, top-shelf coffee and a shabby chic fit-out that’s comforting and welcoming, if a little dated. In addition to the expected egg, toast and porridge-type dishes, there’s breakfast tacos, bacon and waffles, beef and chicken burgers and two vegetarian dishes featuring roasted brassicas.

Stagger’s is also fully licensed with wine, beer and cocktails alongside the usual juices and smoothies. Our pick? The Bucket of Blood – Stagger Lee’s own take on the Bloody Mary (named for a line in Nick Cave’s version of the song), which has been on the menu since day one.
