Fitzroy’s dense with pubs, but The Standard commands one of the suburb’s fiercest followings. Rusted-on locals pack the all-weather beer garden (the owners claim it’s Melbourne’s biggest), and the front bar feels warm and lived in.

Fittingly named, The Standard is quite credibly the gold standard for inner northern pubs. From the leafy beer garden – the largest in Fitzroy, they reckon – to the loyal locals perched at the bar, this pub (first licensed in 1865) is a long-standing Fitzroy favourite.

Venturing from the front bar through the warren of rooms, there’s that lovely old, dilapidated grandeur without any actual dilapidation. Despite its avid following, there are no “locals rule” attitudes here. The Standard is the perfect spot to settle in with a few quiet beers in the afternoon, perhaps with a bit of live music, and to soak up the informal, relaxed atmosphere.

Food is a substantial affair – bell and whistle free – with dishes such as the Standard Burger (with egg, bacon, tomato, beetroot, onion, lettuce, cheese and chips). Weekends and balmy evenings make the beer garden a real draw card; watch it transform from a sleepy, leafy sanctuary to a sought-after summer hang-out. Learn to share and keep your elbows in.
