This quirky lime castle is an improbable oasis away from bustling Chapel Street, and it has a huge courtyard. During the warmer months it’s thronged with locals, all drinking iced beverages and frosty beers.

The Windsor Castle Hotel is an improbable oasis away from the hectic pace of Chapel Street and – nestled behind the train station on the fringe of the green suburb – it seems a mile away. It’s owned by hospitality veteran Tracey Lester, who’s also behind The Carlton Club. The striking lime facade, complete with cinder elephants, may turn some away, as might the largely unremarkable front bar. But to do that would mean missing out on one of Windsor’s true summer gems.

Inside, it’s not your average pub – decorated with paisley and mahogany-clad kitsch interiors. During the warmer months the Windsor Castle’s beer garden throngs with locals downing iced drinks and frosty beers. The spacious area has bamboo fencing, leafy shade, ample seating and its own bar – making it an excellent venue for a Sunday catch-up with friends.

As does the food menu, which features pub classics like burgers; fish and chips; and chicken and eggplant parmas. A hearty beef rendang and slow-braised beef cheeks drizzled with gremolata also make an appearance.
